Long Weekend Yummy!

The heat is on and Canada Day long weekend is here people! Many of my friends actually work all weekend but for most Canadians it is a time to appreciate the beautiful weather outside, and the beautiful country we live in. Long weekends are made for get togethers wether it be with friends, family or both. This weeks summer salad release is is great when made in large servings and very easy on the pocket, not to mention you can eat it hot off the fry pan or even better when served as a cold salad next day.

Sweet Vermicelli Sprout Salad

  • soak vermicelli noodles in cold water until it reaches desired tenderness (for me usually 25 min) I usually only use half a package at a time
  • fry: minced garlic, julienne shallot, julienne orange pepper, edamame (steamed from frozen), and bean sprouts
  • add 3 tbsp grape seed oil (or veg), 1/3 cup of hoisin sauce, 1/4 cup oyster sauce, 1/4 cup of tempura or light soy sauce, and 1 tbsp of sambal sauce (crushed chilli flake paste)
  • add vermicelli noodles to fry pan and sauté for 3 minutes
  • don't forget a pinch of S&P!
  • allow to cool in the fridge over night and garnish with fresh basil or cilantro before serving
The Perfect Pair
This bottle is definitely a summer gem, and go get it NOW while it is still available at the LCBO.  Tawse Wineries 2010 Sketches Riesling has been getting tons of hype and attention for a reason. Its lively aromas of apple and lemon are quickly followed by a kiss of minerality and orange rind on the palate. Riesling is pretty much the best wine to pair with any Asian dish because of its crisp acidity and natural sweetness that compliments so well with spicy food, even when off-dry...not to mention it is by far the most refreshing white wine on the planet. Did I mention Ontario is a hot spot for growing Riesling? This is why I choose a LOCAL wine made from LOCAL grapes from a LOCAL winery, which I also happen to work at. If you cannot find this particular bottle then consider an off-dry German Riesling.

Let the good times roll this weekend, and remember to drink safe, and make local choices :)

Cheers Friends!
